Integrating Research Results into Forest Management Solutions
The Center of Forestry Research and Applied Management conducts research services for private forest sector owners, forest industry, forest investment groups and governmental agencies. The principal researchers are professionals of advanced forest sector knowledge, experience, and acknowledged integrity.
The following are some specific project types that are taken on by the Center:
- Integrate research results derived from multiple University Forest Research Cooperatives into operational solutions that provide gains that will exceed those that could be derived by implementation of individual discipline-centered cooperative recommendations.
- Identify and conduct innovative high-return “gap” research that focuses on the interaction of genetics, silviculture and a changing environment. Gap research is propriety to an individual client(s) that provides the funding for the project.
- Identify and integrate new technology and mega-data that becomes available to increase the efficiency of select forest activities
- Project the value of operationally implementing new technology and forest treatments to rotation gains and returns
- Provide third-party professional estimates of gains from planned forest management investments for investment clients
- Develop silvicultural regimes for integrated or non-integrated forest landowners or investors
- Advise in regards to biomass feedstock sustainability and feasibility
- Host client tours for prospective investors
- Conduct forest management workshops for forest management clients so research results are implemented efficiently across an organization
- Evaluate production potential of proposed timberland purchases or timber management investment considerations
The following are examples of recent work:
- Integrating nutrient loading, protection treatments, seedling size and plant date to determine the optimum return that can be obtained from enhanced genetic containerized seedlings
- Evaluating genetic x nutrition availability interactions on the growth and stem quality of loblolly pine genotypes.
- Evaluating the interaction of genetics and herbicides with regards to herbicide tolerance or sensitivity so expected gains from specific genotypes will be attained.
- Process modeling of biomass yields for five SRWC species across 33 states
- Documenting biomass supply, chain-of-custody, and long-term contract models for emerging bioenergy facilities
- Specialized silvicultural regime development and modeling for Eucalyptus species in Florida
- Evaluation of SRWC biomass feedstock stumpage pricing and impacts on project IRR
- Research measurements, study installation, and plot maintenance for Institutional and Research Cooperative clients
