Derek Dougherty, Dougherty & Dougherty Forestry Services, Inc., Athens, GA
Description: To improve investment returns US Timber Growers need additional competitive markets for their trees. Global and corporate interests currently dominate the manufacturing sector and landowners are subject to mill closures, quotas, low pricing, product culling, and imposed environmental or operational restrictions. Creating integrated landowner manufacturing efforts is an important way to reinvigorate the private timberland investment while protecting the freedom to operate and historical private property rights. These efforts will simultaneously support local communities by creating local jobs and keeping capital and cash flows local.
Who should participate?
This presentation follows up on the recent "Collapse and Potential Renewal of US Timber Grower Markets: A Forest Landowner Perspective" (Download Whitepaper). Individuals interested in learning more about, creating, or working in new integrated forest product ventures to increase landowner returns and improve personal and community livelihoods should participate. Government, NGO, or volunteers who support private forest tree growers and rural communities should participate.
